Differentiation
Below are examples of implementing differentiation. My pedagogy focuses on assisting Special Education students and English Language Learners in my classroom.
POST MAIN OBJECTIVE:
I use curriculum focused on content to allow students to learn the essentials. I try to remove unnecessary materials and words that can distract from the content.
SCAFFOLD:
Delivery of the content is gradually released so students can digest a little at a time and then continue to build their knowledge and understanding of the material.
ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
I activate and provide background knowledge, sometimes with native language support, to allow students to tie new information to something familiar. This helps students as they decode information; first trying to understand in their native language, and then transferring that understanding into English.
PROVIDE VOCABULARY DEFINITIONS AND VISUALS:
It is essential within my daily lessons to review key vocabulary. I define key vocabulary, multiple-meaning words, and figurative language. Please see vocabulary link above for an example of my ongoing vocabulary list we create throughout the year. This list clearly identified the definition with a provided image for the students. The vocabulary list is always accessible through my google classroom.
ACCOMMODATE LEARNING STYLES:
Use audio and visual supports are included components within my lessons. I provide multiple learning opportunities to reinforce key concepts and vocabulary. Provide cross-content application of concepts, to help tie learning together, making it more comprehensible.
USE TECHNOLOGY:
Using technology is a must within my pedagogy. I am a huge fan of keeping up with current technology skills and uses within the classroom. Please see my use of technology button above for a plethora of examples of my technology use.
KNOW YOUR STUDENTS:
Providing a student survey, reviewing past academic achievement, and understanding social information provided are a few of the many ways I get to know my students. Please see survey link above to see an example of a previous student survey I held. Once I review these items, I establish needed individualized instruction to provide opportunities to practice in various contexts. This allows for students to work at their own pace and succeed academically.
